At its headquarters on Pivers Island, the NC Coastal Reserve maintains a motorboat that is used to carry out mission-oriented activities throughout the year at the Rachel Carson site. The Jones Brothers skiff is a small shallow-draft vessel (17' flat-bottomed skiff, 50hp engine - pictured above), which allows Reserve staff to access all areas of the Rachel Carson site during a wide range of tidal conditions. The vessel is used to support site maintenance, natural resource monitoring and protection, education programs, and research activities. It is essential for the Reserve to maintain a reliable boat and engine so that managers can maintain the Rachel Carson site in its most natural condition.
